BOOK CLUB L'Élégance du hérisson by Muriel Barbery
The Elegance of the Hedgehog (L’Élégance du hérisson) is French philosophy teacher Muriel Barbery’s second and most popular novel. The book follows events in the life of Renée, a concierge whose deliberately concealed intelligence is uncovered by an unstable but intellectually precocious girl named Paloma, the daughter of an upper-class family living in the Parisian hôtel particulier where Renée works.
The Elegance of the Hedgehog is full of allusions to literary works, music, films, and paintings. It incorporates themes relating to philosophy, class consciousness, and personal conflict, through the lens of the two alternating narrators, Renée and Paloma. Paloma’s parts take the form of her journal entries and other philosophical reflections; Renée’s story is also told in the first person but in a more novelistic style.
The novel became a publishing success in France upon its 2006 release, selling over two million copies. It has been translated into more than forty languages, and has attracted much critical praise.
This workshop will be held online for 4 Sundays, from July 24 to August 14.
