Book Club – Boris Vian, L’Écume des jours (Froth On The Daydream)

Join us for the second edition of the beloved Coucou LA Book Club! Hosted by Claire, book lover and poet, the Coucou Book Club’s aim is to practice French through a literary, emotional and esthetic-driven approach.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

BORIS VIAN, L’ÉCUME DES JOURS (Froth On The Daydream) 1947

For this new Book club session, come dive into the surrealist and poetic world of Boris Vian, through his most famous novel L’Écume des jours.

Boris Vian (1920 – 1959) was a French writer, poet and also a jazz musician, singer, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. He is famous for his politically engaged work, his humanist sensitivity, and his highly individual writing style with numerous made-up words, subtle wordplay, and surrealistic plots.

His novel L’Écume des jours (literally: “The Foam of Days“) is the best known of his works and one of the few translated into English. Taking place in a surreal world where animals and inanimate objects reflect the emotions of humans, the story follows Colin, a newlywed man whose wife develops a rare and bizarre illness.

During each session of this book-club, we will explore Boris Vian’s poetic universe, meet with his complex inhabitants, and get familiar with Boris Vian’s unique language. We will also discuss and reflect on the main themes of the novel, such as the sweet tragedy of romantic love, or the physicality of emotions…

The book club will run over the course of 4 Saturday sessions, from Nov. 14th to Dec. 12th, 2 to 4pm PST.

Skipping Sat. 11/28 for Thanksgiving. This workshop will be held on Zoom.

For level 4 and above.
