WWII HISTOIRE DE FRANCE SERIES

Workshops

The defeat and humiliation of Germany at the end of WWI, the redrawing of European borders and the power shift in favor of the United States, the Great Depression of the 1930’s and the rise of Adolf Hitler in 1933 as the new chancellor of Germany are some of the elements that precipitated Europe into a second major conflict, so soon after the first.

We’ll explain how France was split in two following the quick defeat of the French army, the early armistice signed by Pétain and the exile of the French government. We’ll explore specific events that have become sources of national pride (the French Resistance and General De Gaulle’s Appeal of 18 June, the “D-Day” Normandy landings, and the outcome of the international treaties that ended the war), as well as more shameful episodes (the collaboration of Vichy France with Nazi Germany, the 1942 Vel d’Hiv raid, the 1944 massacres in Tulle and Oradour-sur-Glane).

In conclusion, we will see how this traumatic war shaped France and its people; carved out and distributed Europe between the winning parties; and led to the Cold War, the creation of the French Fifth Republic and the fall of the French colonial empire (Algerian and Indochina Wars).
