Join Bhavana on Zoom on Wednesday, January 26th at 7:30pm (CST) for a discussion on La petite dernière (The Last One) by Fatima Daas.
Based on the author’s own life, “La petite dernière,” follows a young, lesbian Muslim woman in a tough Paris suburb who struggles to reconcile her conflicting identities.
The youngest daughter of Algerian immigrants, Fatima Daas is raised in a home where love and sexuality are considered taboo, and signs of affection avoided.
Critics praised the novel’s powerful lyricism, and hailed the author for breaking taboos around gender, sexuality and religion. “The Last One” won best debut novel in the 2020 Les Inrockuptibles Literary Prize, organized by the French cultural magazine, and has since been translated into eight languages.
Feel free to read it in your preferred language.
