Le Book Club – The Widow Clicquot (8/6)

Grand Débutant

In this monthly Book Club, open to all levels of French, we will read books about French culture and history, or written by Francophone authors. In an effort to be accessible to Francophiles of all levels, the books chosen will be written/translated in English. However, expect the discussion to be both in English and French, as a way for you to learn new vocabulary related to literature and to the French language and culture.

This month we are reading ‘The Widow Clicquot’ by Tilar J. Mazzeo

The Widow Clicquot is the New York Times bestselling business biography of the visionary young widow who built a champagne empire, became a legend in her tumultuous times, and showed the world how to live with style. Tilar J. Mazzeo brings to life the woman behind the label, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, in this utterly intoxicating book that is as much a fascinating journey through the process of making this temperamental wine as a biography of a uniquely tempered and fascinating woman.

This book club is led by Coucou’s intern, Cassidy, and meets on the first Thursday of each month, 5:00-6:30pm (CDT).
Please note that our Book Club will meet online via Zoom for the time being.
Free event. RSVP by emailing us at and we will send you a link to join the meeting online.
If they do not have the book, consider purchasing a copy from a Black-owned bookstore. Visit, where they have an article listing 55 Black-owned bookstores across the US. Here’s the link:
