Want to know how to say that in French? 🇫🇷: « je (ne) suis pas dans mon assiette » Literally it means « I’m not in my plate. »

« Une assiette » means plate but a long time ago, this word also meant « a physical and mental stability » and that’s where the expression finds its origin!

In modern French though, this could totally be interpreted as « not having any appetite » which generally happens if you don’t feel well physically or mentally.

⚠️When talking about funny common mistakes, we have to mention this one: « je suis excité·e » !

Yes, you might have heard French people say it, and yes, even though it’s mostly an anglicism, they probably meant « I’m excited »…

But... depending of the context, it can also mean « I’m h*rny » or « se*ually excited » so be aware! 🙃

Instead, use these alternatives to express excitement:
• J’ai hâte
• Je suis impatient·e
• Je suis pressé·e

They all mean « I can’t wait » or « I’m looking forward to it » !

If you ever noticed someone making a face at you after using « je suis excité·e »? Now you know why!

Are you getting used to adding some verlan to your French speaking practice?

Let’s break this one down: “une teuf” !

“une teuf” is verlan for “une fête” which means “a party.” So if you hear, “j’ai une teuf ce soir”, it would translate to: “I have a party tonight.” And if you’re new here, verlan is French slang and ressembles pig latin; where the syllables in a word are actually flipped around! I.e. verlan = l’invers (backwards)

You may have also heard the expression “faire la teuf” (to party) but this might sound a bit outdated now. You can still say “faire la fête”, it’s totally correct!

✨Feeling like gossiping today? Here’s another French expression to have under your belt.

If you know someone who “has a big head”, in French it translates pretty literally from English: “avoir la grosse tête”!

In the same way, it’s used to describe someone very arrogant and pretentious or who feels superior towards others.

A similar expression would be “prendre le melon” which literally translates “to take the melon” but figuratively means « to get a big head » 🍈

✨Do you have any idea what the French word “relou” means?

“Relou” is verlan for “lourd” which means “heavy” but is also a slang word for “annoying” and is used in very casual conversations with people you’re familiar with.

You can use it for situations, things or even people:
• C’est relou = it’s annoying
• T’es relou = you’re annoying
• Il / elle est relou = he / she’s annoying

Do you know someone who always makes a big deal out of something?

The French expression for this is, of course, related to food! We say: « en faire tout un plat », literally « to make a whole dish out of it ».

Originally, back in the 17th century, the expression was referring to « an exaggeration in the preparation of a dish. »

But since then, its meaning has evolved and it’s now used to describe someone who exaggerates the importance of a situation or has disproportionate reactions.

You can also say:
« En faire tout un fromage » = to make a whole cheese out of it

Surprise surprise... another cheese reference ;)

It's always nice to compliment someone, but sometimes you have to be very careful...

Have you ever literally translated "you're so good" by saying "t'es trop bonne" when talking to a woman?

Well, in this case what you’re actually saying is "you're looking good" (super objectively) or "you're hot as f***"! This kind of remark is definitely not “cute”.

When used to describe women (yes, French can be very sexist) the adjective "bonne" can sound very rude. So watch out not to use it!

Instead, use these more…wholesome ways to tell female-identifying folks that they’re good (*at something): t'es très douée" or "t'es trop forte."

You can also just be more specific by saying:
T'es une bonne prof = you're a good teacher
T'es une bonne chanteuse = you're a good singer
T'es une bonne cuisinière = you're a good cook

So steer clear of this one and share this with a friend who could use a good language tip 😜

Are you getting the hang of using “verlan” by now? You might already know what “vénère” means but if not, it’s a good one to keep under your belt!

The original French word is “énervé” which means “angry” or “annoyed.” When using verlan it kind of sounds like if you were saying “I’m pissed” in English.

So next time you’re upset you could flip the word around and say: “je suis vénère”

Do you want to sound even more like a French person? When you combine “je” and “suis” together it creates this sound: “chui”

POV: You’re ready to head out the door when suddenly your friend calls to cancel 😒. So when plans fall through, how do we say that in French? There’s a good expression to have at hand!

In French, you can say “c’est tombé à l’eau” (it fell through). It literally translates to “it fell into the water.”💧

If plans or projects fall into the water, they’re likely gone forever and therefore not happening anymore. Makes sense, right?!

The weird thing is that, originally, in the 12th century, the expression was “tomber dans le lac” and had a totally different meaning. It meant “to fall into a trap.”

If you don’t know what « le verlan » is, it’s a type of French slang where syllables are reversed in order to create a new word. For some words, the spelling might slightly change — but what matters is the sound. For instance, the word « verlan » itself comes from the word « l’envers » which literally means « backwards » in French! Sheesh!

Let’s get started with the word « crazy », which in French is « fou », but what about in verlan? You guessed it... »ouf »! This one you’ll definitely hear a lot and it’s used in all types of contexts.

Nan mais, le mec il est complètement ouf !
I mean, the guy is completely crazy!

C’était comment la fête de ton anniversaire ?
How was your birthday party?
- C’était ouf !
- It was crazy!

On va à la plage ce week-end ?

Take a look at our most recent outing at the Carreau Club where we got together to play pétanque - a popular sport that originated in France and that can be played leisurely or in a more competitive nature (Carreau Club actually hosts leagues for anyone interested)!

The rules of the game apply a bit differently than other « boules games », like Bocce, and does require a bit of strategy. After a few practice rounds, I think it’s safe to say we all acquired a new skill...and learned new French vocabulary along the way. For example, did you know that the little ball you throw to mark your target is called « un cochonnet »?

As many of you know, one of our longtime teachers at Coucou, Eléonore, has joined the team at our sister company @we.are.6pm and this past week she wrapped up her final group class lesson with an amazing group of students 🥰

Here are a few departing words from the ✨teacher extraordinaire✨:

“I’ve taught level 6 on Tuesdays at 7pm for the past 8 years and this week was my last class. It’s been a pleasure and a lot of fun to get to know so many students throughout the years. On Tuesday, my wonderful group brought cheese, wine, cakes and gifts, and I was so touched and thankful to have met such great people! Un grand merci à tous et à toutes!”
