WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS LEVEL

Level 4 moves into the future, the conditional, and hypothetical situations, giving you more ways to talk about possibilities, choices, and imagined scenarios.

TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE

  • Futur simple formation and the main irregular stems
  • Futur proche vs. futur simple
  • Plans, predictions, and long-term intentions
  • Future forms in common French sentence structures

USE THE CONDITIONAL

  • Present conditional formation
  • Politeness, advice, wishes, and imagined possibilities
  • Past conditional for what would, could, or should have happened
  • Regret, hindsight, and alternative outcomes

BUILD HYPOTHESES WITH “SI”

  • Si + present with the future for real possibilities
  • Si + imparfait with the present conditional for imagined situations
  • Si + plus-que-parfait with the past conditional for alternative pasts
  • How tense combinations show both timeline and degree of reality

WORK WITH NEWS, CULTURE, AND CINEMA

  • Les faits divers and vocabulary around crime and investigations
  • Everyday social situations and cultural comparisons
  • Going out: theater, exhibitions, nightlife, and more
  • French cinema vocabulary
WEEK BY WEEK
Lesson 1: Review: Past Tenses and Object Pronouns

A working review of the three past tenses and object pronouns that Level 4 relies on. You’ll use them in a film review and in a longer conversation about how two people met, with an emphasis on keeping the timeline and pronouns clear.

Lesson 2: News Stories and True Crime

Les faits divers are short news stories about crimes, accidents, and unusual events. You’ll read a full French article based on a real 1991 murder case and build vocabulary around investigations, suspects, evidence, motives, and verdicts.

Lesson 3: The Simple Future

The futur simple is used to talk about what will happen. You’ll learn the regular endings, the main irregular stems, and a few places where French uses this future differently from English, including after quand.

Lesson 4: If-Then: Hypotheses About the Future

The first si structure deals with a real future possibility: if one thing happens, what will happen next? You’ll pair si plus the present with the future to make plans, set conditions, and talk about likely outcomes.

Lesson 5: The Present Conditional

The present conditional is the French form behind “would,” and it also comes up constantly in polite requests, advice, and wishes. You’ll learn how to build it and use it in phrases like “I would like,” “you should,” and “could you?”

Lesson 6: If-Then: Hypotheses About the Present

This si structure is for imagining a different present: if I were rich, I would buy an apartment. You’ll use si plus the imparfait with the present conditional to talk about what you would do if things were different.

Lesson 7: Would You Make a Good French Person?

A culture quiz built around ten everyday situations, from splitting a check to waiting in line. You’ll practice the hypothesis structure from the previous lesson while comparing a few French and American social habits.

Lesson 8: The Past Conditional

The past conditional is how French says “would have,” “could have,” and “should have.” You’ll use it to talk about regret, missed possibilities, and things that might have gone differently.

Lesson 9: If-Then: Hypotheses About the Past

The third si structure looks back at the past: if something had happened differently, what would the result have been? You’ll pair the plus-que-parfait with the past conditional to build those sentences.

Lesson 10: Going Out: Culture and Cinema

This lesson covers the vocabulary of going out, from theater and exhibitions to nightlife and cinema. You’ll also work with a longer conversation that brings past tenses, object pronouns, the future, and the conditional together.
