LEVEL 02
GRAND DÉBUTANT

The logic that makes French actually click.

Level 2 goes deeper into the present tense with irregular and reflexive verbs, questions, negation, and articles, then introduces the passé composé so you can start talking about the past.

Who is it for?

Level 2 is for advanced beginners with the equivalent of Level 1 foundations.

  • You can build simple sentences in the present tense.
  • You’re comfortable with regular -er verbs and a few essential irregular verbs such as être, avoir, aller, and faire.
  • You can introduce yourself and talk about familiar everyday topics.
  • You’re ready to add more verb patterns and more complex sentence structures.

This is still a beginner level, but your range of French expands quickly.

What you’ll learn in this level:

Level 2 expands your control of the present tense and introduces the verb patterns and grammar structures that make everyday French much more flexible.

ASK QUESTIONS AND EXPRESS WHAT YOU NEED

  • Three ways to ask yes-or-no questions, plus the main question words
  • Modal verbs: pouvoir, vouloir, and devoir
  • The difference between the 2 verbs to say “to know”: savoir and connaître

SEE THE PATTERNS IN IRREGULAR VERBS

  • The prendre, venir, and tenir families
  • The partir, mettre, and attendre families
  • The finir, lire, and écrire families
  • Venir de + infinitive to talk about what just happened

USE REFLEXIVE AND RECIPROCAL VERBS

  • Reflexive verbs for daily routines and actions you do to yourself
  • Reciprocal verbs for what people do to each other
  • Common pronominal verbs used in everyday conversation

GET MORE PRECISE WITH ARTICLES, QUANTITY, AND NEGATION

  • C’est vs. il / elle est for identifying and describing people and things
  • Definite, indefinite, and partitive articles
  • Expressions of quantity and the use of de
  • Negative expressions beyond ne… pas

START TALKING ABOUT THE PAST

  • The passé composé with avoir
  • Regular past participles
  • Time expressions for talking about when something happened

USE FRENCH IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS

  • Ordering food and navigating a restaurant
  • Asking for and giving directions
  • Talking about daily routines and everyday interactions

What is the goal at the end of the level?

By the end of Level 2, you’ll have a broader, more flexible present tense and more tools for handling everyday conversations.

You’ll be able to:

  • Ask and answer different types of questions
  • Use common irregular, modal, reflexive, and reciprocal verbs
  • Talk about routines, food, quantities, and everyday needs with more precision
  • Choose articles and build a wider range of negative sentences
  • Start talking about completed past actions with the passé composé

The goal isn’t to memorize every verb. It’s to recognize the patterns and know what to do with them.
