LEVEL 05
CONFIRMÉ

Advanced grammar, made logical.

Level 5 brings together some of the most advanced grammar in the Signature Class sequence. We will make sense of when and why French uses the subjunctive, how relative pronouns connect ideas, and how time expressions shape meaning in more complex sentences.

Signature Class Conversation Lab

Who is it for?

Level 5 is for advanced-intermediate students ready for the last major grammar pieces in the Signature Class sequence.

  • You can use present, past, future, and conditional forms.
  • You can build hypothetical sentences and keep the timeline clear.
  • You can explain and defend ideas with some detail.
  • You want more precision when expressing time, doubt, emotion, judgment, and complex relationships between ideas.

The grammar gets more advanced here, but the goal stays the same: understand the system well enough to use it.

What you’ll learn in this level:

Level 5 focuses on advanced sentence structure, including the subjunctive, relative pronouns, and more precise ways to express time, subjectivity, and nuance.

EXPRESS TIME AND DURATION PRECISELY

  • Il y a, dans, en, depuis, pour, and pendant
  • Ongoing vs. completed duration
  • Elapsed time and points in the past or future
  • How French organizes different relationships in time

UNDERSTAND AND USE THE SUBJUNCTIVE

  • Present subjunctive formation and the main irregular forms
  • When the subjunctive is used for necessity, desire, doubt, emotion, judgment, purpose, and concession
  • When French uses the indicative or an infinitive instead
  • Past subjunctive for actions that happened before the reaction or judgment

BUILD LONGER, MORE PRECISE SENTENCES

  • Simple relative pronouns: qui, que, où, and dont
  • Compound relative pronouns: lequel, laquelle, lesquels, and lesquelles
  • Contractions with auquel and duquel
  • Connecting clauses and avoiding repetition in longer sentences

EXPAND YOUR FRENCH THROUGH CULTURE

  • Colloquial French and tone in everyday social situations
  • French popular music and cultural references
  • The regions of France: cities, food, landscapes, traditions, and history
  • Vocabulary and wordplay through Le petit bac

What is the goal at the end of the level?

By the end of Level 5, you’ll have the grammar to express more complex relationships between ideas, time, and point of view.

You’ll be able to:

  • Use the main French time expressions with greater precision
  • Form and use the present and past subjunctive
  • Recognize when French calls for the subjunctive, indicative, or an infinitive
  • Use simple and compound relative pronouns to connect ideas
  • Build longer, multi-clause sentences and express doubt, emotion, judgment, purpose, and nuance

The goal isn’t to collect exceptions. It’s to understand the logic well enough to make these structures usable.
