Années 60

Geneviève Grad and Raymond Lefèvre – Douliou-Douliou Saint-Tropez (1964)

A sunny, carefree ode to Saint-Tropez at the height of its 1960s glamour. Featured in Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez, a hugely popular 1964 French comedy starring Louis de Funès as an overzealous police officer transferred to the glamorous seaside town of Saint-Tropez, the song captures the playful, jet-set fantasy of the French Riviera with an irresistibly light, retro feel.

Hervé Vilard – Capri c’est fini (1965)

One of the great French heartbreak songs of the 1960s. Hervé Vilard turns the Italian island of Capri into a symbol of a love affair that’s over, pairing a dramatic, instantly memorable chorus with pure yé-yé-era melancholy.

Années 70

Jane Birkin – Di Doo Dah (1973)

A playful, slightly offbeat pop song that perfectly captures Jane Birkin’s breezy, mischievous style. Light and catchy on the surface, it has the quirky charm and understated sensuality that defined much of her music in the 1970s.

Joe Dassin – L’été indien (1975)

A nostalgic classic built around the memory of an unusually warm autumn and a love that has slipped away. With its spoken opening and sweeping melody, the song turns the idea of an “Indian summer” into a bittersweet symbol of romance, memory, and passing time.

Années 80

Images – Les demons de minuit (1986)

An irresistible slice of ’80s French pop, full of synths, drama, and late-night energy. The song is about giving in to those restless “midnight demons”. Still a hit at parties, with everyone gleefully singing along the chorus.

Desireless – Voyage, voyage (1989)

A dreamy synth-pop anthem about traveling far beyond borders, landscapes, and everyday life. With Desireless’s distinctive voice and hypnotic chorus, it became one of the most internationally recognizable French songs of the 1980s. And of course, as iconic as this song was the singer’s hairstyle.

Années 90

Cheb Khaled – Aicha (1996)

A sweeping love song in which the narrator offers Aïcha everything he can imagine, only for her to insist that what she really wants is respect, equality, and freedom. Written by celebrated songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman for Khaled, it became a huge hit and a landmark crossover between raï and French pop.

Daft Punk – Around the world (1997)

A minimalist French house classic built around an endlessly repeated bassline and just one lyric: “around the world.” Its hypnotic simplicity, funky groove, and iconic Michel Gondry video helped make Daft Punk international stars and define the French Touch era.

Années 2000

K-Maro – Femme Like U (2004)

A sleek blend of French pop, R&B, and hip-hop that became one of the defining francophone hits of the early 2000s. With its bilingual lyrics and ultra-catchy chorus, K-Maro delivers a confident ode to an irresistible woman.

Ilona Mitrecey – Un Monde Parfait (2005)

A bright, sugary electro-pop hit built around a childlike vision of an ideal world filled with animals, colors, and happiness. Its cartoonish sound and irresistibly repetitive chorus made it a huge mid-2000s phenomenon in France.

Années 2010

Stromae – Alors on danse (2010)

A deceptively catchy electro-pop anthem about escaping the pressures of work, money, heartbreak, and everyday life by dancing them away. Its dark lyrics, minimalist beat, and unforgettable hook made Stromae an international breakout star.

Aya Nakamura – Djadja (2018)

A confident, slang-filled pop hit in which Aya Nakamura, one of the biggest francophone pop stars in the world, calls out a man spreading lies about their relationship. With its Afrobeat-influenced rhythm, and instantly quotable chorus, it became a global hit and helped redefine contemporary French pop.

Années 2020

13’Organisé – Bande organisé (2020)

A massive posse cut that brings together some of Marseille’s biggest rappers, including Jul, SCH, Naps, and Soso Maness. Packed with local slang, swagger, and references to Marseille life, it became a cultural phenomenon and one of the defining French rap hits of the decade.

Booba – Dolce Camara (2024)

A dark, confident rap track built around luxury, status, seduction, and the larger-than-life personas of two generations of French rap. Booba and SDM trade sharp verses over an ominous production, turning the song into a showcase of pure swagger.

Triangle des bermudes – Charger (2025)

A high-energy rap track driven by explosive chants, militaristic imagery, and an almost battle-ready sense of momentum. Its infectious hook and maximalist energy helped make it one of the surprise French hits of 2025.

Bleu Soleil & Luisa – Soleil Bleu (2025)

A dreamy, sun-soaked blend of French pop, electro, reggae, and dub centered on the desire to live freely and escape everyday constraints. Its warm, hypnotic sound made it one of the breakout songs of summer 2025.

Angèle – Dis-le (2026)

A sleek, euphoric pop track from Belgian star Angèle about trusting your instincts, speaking up, and expressing what you really feel. Built around a hypnotic club pulse and an insistent refrain, it turns self-expression into something both intimate and liberating.

From yé-yé and chanson to French Touch, rap, and global pop, this playlist shows just how much French & francophone music has evolved. Different eras, different sounds, but the same ability to turn a catchy song into a cultural moment.
